R-22 Phase Out
Air conditioning and refrigeration replacement
R-22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant gas, which was commonly used within air conditioning systems, process chillers and industrial refrigeration plant applications prior to 2003.
Due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer, R-22 gas has been banned. For any equipment affected by the legislation, this has meant carrying out any repairs or maintenance is incredibly restrictive, and in most circumstances, impossible.
While it is not illegal to have a fully functioning air conditioning or refrigeration system running on R-22 refrigerant gas, if a leak occurs there are serious implications.
Regardless of the legislation the affected air conditioning systems are now approaching the end of their lifespan and due a replacement. It can be possible to make interim modifications to a system running on R-22 refrigerant; however, a replacement is certainly advisable, especially in critical plant areas, where a reliable cooling system is heavily relied upon to keep equipment and goods at a consistent cool temperature, such as server rooms and production facilities. In these circumstances, a breakdown would hugely impact on a company’s daily routine and should be avoided at all costs.
New air conditioning and refrigeration systems are far more energy efficient. They will effectively pay for themselves, by lowering your energy bills and significantly reducing your C02 emissions.
To support the replacement of systems running on R-22 refrigerant, the Government offers tax relief as part of its Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme. This is intended to encourage businesses to invest in energy-saving equipment. There are also payment plans available on new air conditioning installations, which, when coupled with our Planned Preventative Maintenance scheme, offer very competitive warranty periods on parts and labour.
